The best transcriber app, by the job you need done

There is no single best transcriber app, because the word covers three jobs. To type your own speech into any app as you talk, Lven Instant: on-device, offline, no word cap, never rewrites. To caption what other people are saying, Google's Live Transcribe on Android and Live Captions built into Windows 11, both processed on the device. To turn a recording or a meeting into text afterwards, Otter — which is what it is built for and what Lven is not.

Scored on
  1. Which job: captions of others, recordings, or your own dictation
  2. Where the audio is processed
  3. Works offline
  4. Limits and price
  5. What it does to the words

FAQ

Common questions.

Is a transcriber app the same as a dictation app?
No. A dictation app types your own words into whatever app you are using, as you speak. A transcriber in the other two senses either captions what other people say on screen or turns an existing recording into a text file. Lven Instant and Lven Cloud are dictation: they do not take a recording and hand back a transcript.
Can Lven transcribe an audio file or a meeting recording?
No. Lven transcribes live speech from the microphone and types it where your cursor is. For recordings and meetings, use a tool built for that job, such as Otter, which caps transcription minutes per month on its free and paid plans.
Which transcriber works offline?
For dictation, Lven Instant runs the speech model on the device and works with no connection after the one-time engine download. For captions, Windows Live Captions processes everything on the PC, and Live Transcribe can download languages for offline use on Pixel and select Android 12 devices.
What is the best free transcriber?
For captions, the ones already on your device: Live Captions on Windows 11 and Google's Live Transcribe on Android. For dictation, Windows voice typing and your phone keyboard's microphone cost nothing but are generally cloud-processed. For recordings, Otter's free plan covers 300 transcription minutes a month.
